Facebook's crack
We know that every startup that’s hot right now is making its money in Google slipstream. Facebook is in exception, the busiest startup of the web 2.0 eras. Facebook is my generation’s way of picking up the telephone. It’s a social networking sites in which anyone can create maintain relationship that wouldn’t exist otherwise. What Facebook got here is a self contained universe called the “walled gardens” that now encompasses 70 million people or more. The best thing Zuckerberg did when it open up Facebook to software developers inviting them to write little programs and share in whatever revenue it generate. Another smart move, when it unveiled it new services for advertisers, Facebook ads, the best medium ever in online advertising. Here information can be share with your Facebook’s friends. What Facebook want here is members will spread ads through their networks. A recommendation from a trusted friend is one the best way in social ads. No web company in the history of the net could match Facebook astonishing success. Its market valuation climbed to $15 billion making it the fastest ever in the history of the web. There are billions of dollars of buyout offers have been declined. But there are challenges ahead, “facebook fatigue”, privacy, monetization issues are some only problem it encountered. The most controversial of those is the “Beacon”. It was a crack in Facebook. Users dislike this thing. It’s ridiculous and creepy. It could weaken Facebook’s structure. Facebook ads could drive way users. Users can opt out of sharing news their activities with their friends, its sounds like spamming your friends. What if an X-rated movie could slip through. A whole new type of news feed might dilute Facebook pages. Not only users spot some cracks in Facebook but also the third party developers, these are software developers invited to create widget or software applications inside Facebook. Its Zuckerberg spinning out of control? The rule is always changing! They prefer to work to Google’s OpenSocial, which provide flexibility and better environment. With the growing popularity of OpenSocial, Facebook could be in great trouble. How long Facebook lucks lasts we don’t know but whatever the rules of the game played Facebook must thrive. It must remain true to its vision focusing in building community rather than on a mere exit.
