via John Chow:
K-rad is sponsoring a contest to find a new name for his import video game store HKToyz.com. The winner will receive any video game in their inventory for free, for any system and region: Wii, PS3, XBOX 360, DS, PSP.
Here are the rules and guidelines:
The rules are as follows:
- Submissions must be sent to this email address. Please do not post your submissions in the comments system! We want to keep this private, so someone doesn’t come across a name before I does and quickly squat the domain.
- The domain name part will be handled by me. Come up with any name you like - I am not looking for a domain in particular, just something that will lead to a name for the store and a domain. If it’s a cool name and the domain is taken, obviously we can’t use it. But let me worry about that.
- Submit as many names as you like. Try to follow the naming guidelines however.
- There is no deadline, so keep submitting until a new name has been announced. Once a name is decided on, and a domain registered, the contest will be closed and the winner announced.
NAMING GUIDELINES
- I do NOT want a generic name. I do NOT want to call it “hkimportvideogames.com” or anything like that. Google is placing less and less importance on the words in the domain (thank the squatters and MFA cockroaches for that) so it doesn’t matter if the name describes the site exactly.
- What I want is something MEMORABLE. hkimportvideogames.com might describe the site well, but nobody is going to remember the domain (”is that hkimportvideogame.com or hkimportvideogames.com?”).
- The name doesn’t have to be in English, or any language at all in fact. If you can come up with a cool sounding name in Japanese that is easy to remember, please submit it! Chinese names will receive less consideration
- The name should be related to Japan, or Asia in general. Nothing specific to China or Hong Kong really. For most people, China = cheap knockoff products. And for a lot of people who don’t know any better, Hong Kong = China. So by association, HK = cheap knockoffs (which is part of the reason I am changing the name in the first place).
- Something that fits in with gaming in general, especially import gaming. Martial arts related is good too, or anything that suggests ‘Japanese’ or ‘Asian’. I came up with a couple names that sound cool, but are a little too specific to martial arts/martial arts video games.
